Micro Business Projects
Besides the high risk of earthquakes in the entire country, Nepal also has to deal with floods and landslides, especially occurring during the monsoon from June to August every year. Many people lose their homes and livelihoods. Very often, businesses fall apart.
Nepal is still considered one of the world's poorest and least developed countries. That is the main reason that especially male family members are going abroad for work, mostly coming home only every two or more years and separating families. Around 400,000 young Nepalese enter the labor market outside Nepal every year. A third of all Nepali households and 35% in rural areas have at least one person working abroad. The salary is often not invested in new sectors but used for living costs and to cover dept. That keeps the cycle of migration going.
To break that cycle and enable families to stay and live together at home, we started to help villages and communities by giving loans to start small micro businesses, such as goat farms or a tailoring business. We also organize skill training, such as for local women to learn sewing and tailoring so that they can start their small businesses.
